Welcome to our first discussion!

Welcome to our English classes' To Kill a Mockingbird blog! Weekly, I'll be posting different questions and tidbits of information for you. You'll be required to respond to my posting and one of your classmates. When you respond, be sure to include your actual name (the one we use in class--no pseudonyms!) and the name of the person to whom you're responding. Make sure your responses are thoughtful and that you thoroughly answer the questions (remember, this is for a grade)! Also, show proper "netiquette" by being respectful to others and remember--this is an educational blog! Your postings need to relate specifically to our classwork.

Alright, let's get started.  Discuss one of the main characters from chapters 1-11.  As you analyze that character, consider the five ways authors reveal characters--by what they say, how they act, how they physically look, what they think, and how others think/react to them.  List the character you will analyze, identify three characteristics that character has (include quotes from the book that exemplify those characteristics) and explain them.  Last, include a Bible verse referring to one of those characteristics.  Does the character exhibit godly characteristics?  Why or why not?

To help you get started with a list of character traits, you can download a list of emotions from http://www.sba.pdx.edu/faculty/mblake/448/FeelingsList.pdf.

    1. Mrs. Johnson-
In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout often shows her lack of self-control. Throughout most of Scout’s childhood she is known to get into various scuffles with the children at school. One can most definitely see her frustration and lack of self-control when she says, “My fists were clenched and I was ready to let fly. Atticus had promised me he would wear me out if he ever heard of me fighting any more; I was far too old and too big for such childish things, and the sooner I learned to hold in, the better off everybody would be. I soon forgot. Cecil Jacobs made me forget.” (P. 740)

Another character trait that Scout portrays in the story is her pride. After Atticus shot Tim Johnson ,the mad dog, Scout reveals her pride of Atticus when she says, “ It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived.” (P.100) Though Jem and Scout had normal sibling tension, in this instance one can tell how proud Scout is of Jem when she says.” I admired my brother. Matches were dangerous, but cards were fatal.” (P.55)

One particular situation where Scout reveals how stubborn she can be is when she refuses to wash her mouth which would result in the taste of the gum expiring. Scout displays this stubbornness when she responds to Jem’s order of rinsing out her mouth by saying, “Ain’t neither, it’ll take the taste outa my mouth.” (P. 34)

Scout is very outspoken and often puts her foot in her mouth. Calpurnia quickly tries to cease Scout’s tendency to blurt out what is on her mind when, at the dining table, asks what in the sam hill Walter was doing and says, “But he’s gone and drowned his dinner in syrup.” (P.24)

A Bible verse that would apply to Scout’s lack of self-control and rebellious behavior would be Proverbs 25:28, which states, “Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.” This verse could be applied to Scout’s life, because controlling her temper seemed to be a big issue for her, as it was seen that she was always getting into quarrels with others, whether for the right reasons or not.

Scout Finch does, however, show some godly character traits because she does show a loving side of her. She shows unconditional love to Atticus because of his loyalty and genuine love in return. She shows her love by ‘trying’ her hardest no to get into fights. She remembers that getting into a fight would mean letting Atticus down, and since she loved him she did not want to let him down. This would be considered godly character since loving would be considered a service according to Galatians 5:13, which states, “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serves one another.”

In regard to your character traits on Jean-Louise "Scout" Finch, I would completely agree with you. Throughout the novel, Scout is a very outspoken character and she is never afraid to say exactly what is on her mind. Another example would be when Jem invites Walter Cunningham over for dinner, Jem says "Scout here, she's crazy - she won't fight you any more." Scout, in a challenging tone, replies "I wouldn't be too certain of that." (P. 23).

Another attribute that I think Scout Finch portrays throughout the novel is her naivety. An example would be when Cecil Jacobs announced to the school children that "Scout Finch's daddy defended Niggers". After denying the statement, Scout asked Jem "What'd he mean sayin' that?" (P. 74). This shows that Scout does not really comprehend what her father is doing and how it is impacting Maycomb County.

  2. Mrs. Johnson –

In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch portrays many characteristics, but the most prominent would be his courage. When Atticus decides to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of rape, Maycomb County looks down on him and his children. Despite the abuse, scorn, and retaliation of the racist community, Atticus continues to defend Tom because he knows what he is doing is right. Atticus Finch also shows courage when he tries to teach his children tolerance and empathy for those in the community. The example that stands out the most is when Jem vandalizes the camellias of Mrs. Dubose in retaliation for her hateful, racist words to the children because of their father’s actions. Atticus makes Jem repay his actions by reading to Mrs. Dubose, who is trying to overcome her morphine addiction so that she may die with a clear conscience. Atticus explains to Jem what real courage is when he says “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” (P. 112).

Throughout the novel Atticus shows generosity for the people in his community. When Mr. Cunningham, one of Atticus’s clients, cannot come up with the money to pay him for his services, Atticus accepts payments in an assortment of items with no questions asked. Atticus was also willing to accept nothing at all. When Walter Cunningham stated “Mr. Finch, I don’t know when I’ll ever be able to pay you”, Atticus replied “Let that be the least of your worries, Walter.” (P. 20).

Another apparent characteristic of Atticus Finch in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird is his modesty. When a “mad dog” terrorized the streets of Maycomb County, Sheriff Heck Tate knew that only Atticus could hit the dog in a single shot when he exclaimed “I can’t shoot that well and you know it!” (P. 96). At first, Atticus refused to take the gun from Sheriff Tate, which showed his modesty towards his perfect marksmanship. “With movements so swift they seemed simultaneous, Atticus’s hand yanked a ball-tipped lever as he brought the gun to his shoulder. The rifle cracked.” (P. 96). With this, Atticus did indeed shoot the dog with one pull of the trigger. Even before this incident Atticus did not brag about his abilities to his children, leaving them to think that “Atticus can’t do anything…” (P. 90).

A Bible verse that applies to Atticus’s courage is Proverbs 31:8-9 which says “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” This Bible verse applies to Atticus because he defended Tom Robinson, a colored man, who was not able to defend himself. Atticus Finch stood up for what was right and spoke up for those who could not speak for themselves.

Throughout the novel Atticus Finch does exhibit some godly characteristics such as not being quick to judge others. Atticus says “Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I don’t pretend to understand…” (P. 88). This character trait is considered godly because just as Atticus does not refer to people by their skin color, Christ does not judge us by ours.

    1. Jules,

Regarding your choices on the characteristics of Atticus Finch, I would absolutely agree. I agree in the sense that Atticus is a man of great courage. Not only is he courageous due to the fact that he is defending Tom Robinson, but also because he is standing firm in the way he raises his children. His courage is predominantly displayed when he makes Jem do what is right regarding the way he treats Mrs. Dubose, even when Mrs. Dubose does not speak the kindest remarks about him.

Another trait that I would say Atticus has is integrity. The mere fact that he can hold his head up high by doing what is right shows this. A Bible verse that can be applied to Atticus’ integrity would be Proverbs 10:9 which says, “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.”

With no doubt i agree with each characteristics of Atticus that you've posted. He truly is a man of courage. It takes a true great amount of courage to take on such a case given to him, and having to go through invective criticism. Yet having the ability to go on forth.

    3. Jules,

I undoubtedly agree with your statements. Atticus is man worthy of respect for his acts of courage, generosity and modesty. He is able to set aside the world's common view of the African descent to do what is right and true. I believe he is a man of humility. He is not a proud man of his talent. I believe 1 Peter 5:5 is a perfect exampe to Atticus' trait. "Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

  3. Mrs. Johnson-

In To Kill A Mockingbird Jean Louise(Scout) Finch shows a protective/caring side to her. She had to deal with people constantly talking about her father, calling him names, and bringing her family down. Scout defended her family the best way she knew how, by fighting. She did not let anyone, not even her cousin, talk badly about her dad. When her cousin, Francis, called her father a "nigger-lover", Scout punched him in the mouth. She knew that her dad was doing the right thing, no matter what anybody said. "You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't let 'em get your goat." (P. 76).

Another characteristic that Scout portrays is consideration. Scout stopped fighting because of Atticus. Although she wanted to stick up for her father, she knew that Atticus would not like it. The kids at school would continue to call her father names, but she kept her head high. "After my bout with Cecil Jacobs when I committed myself to a policy of cowardice, word got around that Scout Finch wouldn't fight any more, her daddy wouldn't let her. Thi was not entirely correct: I wouldn't fight publicly for Atticus..." (P. 90).

Scout also portrays understanding. She is very young when Atticus defends Tom Robinson and has to deal with the town criticising her father. Throughout the book, she tries to listen and apply all of the advice Atticus gives her. She did not always understand the situation, but she was quick to listen. Scout would always ask her father 'why this?' or 'why that?'. "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." (P.30)

A Bible verse that applies to Scout's consideration is Proverbs 9:9 which says "Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning." This Bible verse applies to Scout because she is always seeking advice and understanding. She is always trying to get answers and see things through others eyes.

Scout exhibits some godly characteristics by being obedient to Atticus when he asked her not to fight. She also showed a godly characteristic by seeking wisdom and advice from her elders. "As Atticus had once advised me to do, I tried to climb into Jem's skin and walk around in it" (P.57). "Somehow if I fought Cecil I would let Atticus down. Atticus so rarely asked Jem and me to do something for him, I could take being called a coward for him." (P.77).

    1. Dear Jordyn-

I agree with you completely. Scout has all of those characteristics.I particularly liked the bible verse you choose for scout. She does show much wisdom and discernment at a very young age. One other example of wisdom is her desire to learn. One of her favorite things to do is read with her father Atticus. She loves reading so much that when she begins school and her teacher Miss. Caroline discovers that scout can read Miss. Caroline becomes upset and tells scout, “Tell your father not to teach you any more -- your father does not know how to teach.”(pg.17) she tells her teacher that he did not but Miss. Caroline does not believe her. She shows her understanding later on when she and Atticus are speaking and he says “If you’ll concede the necessity of going to school, we’ll go on reading every night just as we always have.”(pg.31) She knows a good deal when she sees it. Even though she does not want to go to school, she could not give up reading which in the end was a wise choice.

Boo Radley has a set of "stereotyped" characteristics. One of which showed him as an angry I don't care anybody thinks trouble maker. Off if a legend, Boo didn't care what anyone thought and was quite aggressive. "As Mr. Radley passed by, Boo drove the scissors into his parent's leg, pulled them out, wiped them on his pants, and resumed his activities." (Pg. 11)

However, even with that characteristic, Boo wasn't ordained as crazy. He was high-strung and didn't want to be bothered. When someone is high-strung, any little thing will set them off. "Boo wasn't crazy, he was high-strung at times. It was all right to shut him up." (Also pg. 11)

Away from Boo's stereotyped characteristics, Boo is also caring. When Scout was afraid and cold, watching house fire, Boo wrapped a blanket around her. She, however, wasn't aware of the blanket at all until Atticus confronted her. "'Boo Radley. You were so busy looking at the fire you didn't know it when he put the blanket around you.'" (Pg. 91)

Boo, showing both care and compassion, did expel a godly characteristic. "Again Jesus said, 'Simon son if John, do you truly love me?' He answered, 'Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.' Jesus said, 'Take care of my sheep.'" -John 21:16. Boo even showed love here. He took care of Scout, despite his reputation. So all in all, he showed multiple godly characteristics.

I completely agree with you. 1 Samuel 16:7 states that God looks not at appearances, but that The Lord looks at the heart. And Christ calls us to act as him, and as Christians we are to be courageous followers of him. This is entirely a godly characteristic.

  7. Mrs. Johnson-
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Jeremy Finch (Jem) displays many characteristics. One characteristic that stands out is how brave Jem is. When Dill dared Jem to go touch the side of the Radley’s house he did it. “ In all his life Jem had never declined a dare.” (Pg. 13) Jem also portrays bravery when he is faced with the task of curing Mrs. Dubose’s drug problem. When Scout and he went up to Mrs. Dubose’s front porch the following Monday Mrs. Dubose says , “ So, you brought that dirty little sister of yours, did you? “ Jem replies quietly, “ My sister isn’t dirty and I ain’t scared of you.” (Pg. 106)

Jem also shows in the novel how he has a quick temper. An example is when Scout, Dill, and he are going to try to get a peek of Boo Radley when Jem says, “ Scout, I’m tellin’ you for the last time, shut your trap or go home; I declare to the Lord you’re getting’ more like a girl every day!” (Pg. 51) Another time Jem gets angry is when Mrs. Dubose degrades Atticus saying, “ Your father’s no better than the niggers and trash he works for.” (Pg. 101) The subsequent events led to Jem getting a baton and cutting all the tops off her camellia bush.

Another obvious characteristic of Jem is how creative/intelligent he is. He always took stories and knew how to make them more interesting. Like in this statement by him ,” Well, for one thing, he has a boy named Boo that he keeps chained to a bed in the house over yonder. Boo only comes out at night when you’re asleep and it’s pitch dark. When you wake up at night, you can hear him. Once I heard him scratchin’ on our screen door, but he was gone by the time Atticus got there.” (Pg. 11) He also made up games, and one day he came up with the idea of playing the game Boo Radley. He always could keep himself and Scout busy.
Here are some Bible verses that relate to Jem’s temper. Proverbs 14:17 says, “ A man of quick temper acts foolishly, and a man of evil devices is hated.” James 1:20 states, “For the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” A verse for his bravery is 2 Timothy 1:7 that says, “ For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self- control. “
In the book I do not think Jem shows Godly characteristics. From the beginning when Jem first met Dill he made fun of Dill saying, “Your name’s longer’n you are.” (Pg. 17) When Jem gets mad he would be fast to act, and he wouldn’t think about the consequences. Like with Mrs. Dubose when he hit off all the tops of her camellia bush. Another time he displays a ungodly characteristic is when Scout and he were building the snowman, and they made it in the image of Mr. Avery. A Bible verse that talks about treating others is Matthew 7:12 which says," So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law of the Prophets."

  8. Dear Mrs. Johnson
The character that I have chosen is Scout. Scout is free minded, very quick to speak. She’s like a town boy. And she is very protective when it comes to people saying invective things towards her father.
Scout likes to willing speak her mind, even when what she has to share may not be quiet the right thing to say. For example the day that Jem and Scout meat Dill; Scout kept questioning Dill of the where about of his father “Then if he’s not dead you’ve got one, haven’t you?”(pg8). Another time was when Miss Caroline tried to lean Walter a quarter but he refused, so Scout tried to explained to Miss Caroline the reason for Walter refusal towards the offer. “That’s okay, ma’am, you’ll get to know all the county folks after a while. The Cuninghams never took anything they can’t pay back no church baskets and no scrip stamps. They never took anything off of anybody; they get along on what they have. They don’t have much, but they get along on it.”(pg20) “You’re shamin’ him, Miss Caroline. Walter hasn’t got a quarter at home to bring you, and you can’t use any stovewood.”(pg21) when Jem invited Walter over to eat, after Scout wanted to fight him. They were all eating at the table and Scout went on to speak her mind again about Walter pouring the syrup on his dinner. “But he’s gone and drowned his dinner in syrup,” “He’s poured it all over-“. (pg24)
Scout isn’t lady like; she’s more like a town boy. She doesn’t use proper language, when Uncle Jack came over and hear Scout saying words like “damn”. Which Uncle Jack doesn’t approve of so had to have a tall to her afterwards, informing her that he will not tolerate invective words what so ever as long as he’s staying. “Well I don’t” said Uncle Jack, “not unless there’s extreme provocation connected with ‘em. I’ll be here a week, and I don’t want to hear any words like that while I’m here. Scout, you’ll get in trouble if you go around saying things like that. You want to grow up to be a lady, don’t you?”(pg79) Another reason as to why Scout is more like a town boy rather than a lady is that she hates to wear dresses with a passion. “I could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches; when I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasn’t supposed to be doing things that required pants.”(pg81)
Scout protective when it comes to railing accusations about her father. Like the time when Francis called Scout’s father a nigger lover. “He is not!” “I don’t know what you’re talkin’ about, but you better cut it out this red hot minute!” and at one point Francis had to repeat what he just said before; set off Scout that she’d spilt her knuckle to the bone of his front teeth, But was then pulled away by Uncle Jack.
A Bible verse that goes along with Scout is 1 Corinthians 16: 13 “Be on your guard, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong.” This verse goes along with Scout be she always stays firm in terms in what she believes, and she’s on her guard when it comes to her or her loved ones. She has a strong character.

  9. Mrs. Johnson-
The character I will be choosing is Jeremy Finch. I will be choosing him because he is a very young boy who is very brave. He is a boy who is willing to take a dare from anyone because he wants to keep his name as a person who is daring. He was dared to go and touch the Radley house. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Dill said," You’re too scared even put your big toe in the front yard." (pg. 13-14) Jem, because he is a boy who will not let a dare go past him, he went running to the house and slapped the side of the Radley house. Jem is a very comforting, protective, and a responsible boy. Jem had to be a very responsible and mature boy because his father was defending a black man named Tom Robinson. The family would get a lot of criticism about Atticus. Jem was a boy who as well as Scout are people who do not want to hear bad things about their dad. On pg. 101-112, Jem is having a hard time controlling his temper. Mrs. Dubose is saying a lot about his father. She had said." Not only a Finch waiting on tables but one in the courthouse lawing for niggers!"(pg. 101) Jem then cut all of her camellia buds off of the bush. Jem was being protective about his sister when Scout was at school she was getting into fights and being a bully. Jem had to go and stop her before anyone got hurt even more than they already had. After Scout had gotten into those fights Jem would tell her to stop and then he would tell her like a brother should that she was going to get into a lot of trouble by Atticus if she did not stop fighting. Jem was also very adventurous. He wants to go all over and find things. On pg. 53, Jem, Dill, and Scout went into the Radley’s yard to see what Boo Radley looked like. They looked through the window but all that they saw was a shadow passing them.
The memory verse I will be choosing to go with Jem’s actions is Joshua 1:9 which say: This is my command: be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” I think this verse fits with Jem because he is always being brave and courageous. He is willing to do almost anything. He is a very strong boy and is not easily frightened.
I think that Jeremy Finch does show Godly characteristics as some points, bit at other times he just gets carried away. When he is showing Godly characteristics he is being kind to his family and showing love towards other people. One example of his Godly characteristics is when his sister is getting into all these fights, he is always there to get her out of them and keep her under control. One example of how he loses his Godly characteristics is when he goes and cuts off the buds of Mrs. Dubose’s camellia bushes. He is a boy who you can only guess what his charcteristics are going to be that day.

In the story To Kill a Mockingbird, the character Atticus Finch portrays many characteristics. One of the characteristic he exemplifies is Bravery. He shows this while guarding Tom Robinson, a black man who is accused of rape, while he is in a cell. A lynch mob comes and tries to get Tom. Atticus handles the situation as calmly as possible. He got help from Scout, but Atticus mostly handled this issue. He was brave because he had a mob to deal with and when it was all said and done, the mob left. Atticus states “I don’t look for any trouble, but I can’t agree that there won’t be any”. (Page 145)

Another characteristic Atticus shows is Kindness. Near the beginning of the book, a man by the name of Mr. Cunningham, a farmer, cannot pay Atticus for the jobs he does. Atticus does not have a problem with that, and accepts food instead. His kindness is shown in this quote, “Let paying me be the least of your worries”. Later, he is asked if Mr. Cunningham would pay him, he replied “Not in money, but before the years out, I’ll have been paid”. (Page 20)

Atticus also exemplifies the characteristic confidence. At Tom Robinson’s trial, Atticus knew the people of the court would find Robinson guilty. Throughout the trial, Atticus made big statements that would contradict what Mayella and Bob Ewell would say. Atticus claimed “Can you read and write?” to Bob. (Page 177). Atticus would find out that Bob is left handed. The person who apparently beat Mayella had to have been left handed. Atticus knew that it could not have been Tom, because his left hand was injured in an accident a long time ago. That is how Atticus is confident.

I consider Atticus to have Godly characteristics. He might seem like a stern and quiet man, but he does show that he is courageous, confident, and kind. He has these characteristics because he has actions that show it. A Bible verse that can apply to Atticus is 1 Corinthians 16:13 “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong”. This is applicable because no matter what came to Atticus, he overcame that. In the trial, he stayed firm in what he believed in, and everything came his way. He does have characteristics that are ungodly, but not nearly as much as the Godly ones, from what I think.

In the novel To Kill a Movkingbird, Scout and Jem's father, a lawyer in Maycomb
descended from an old local family. A widower with a dry sense of humor, Atticus
has instilled in his children his strong sense of morality and justice. Those
are just a few of the many characteristics he displays throughout the novel.

One the many traits that Atticus displays, and probably the most important, is
courage. He is a lawyer who defends a black man accused of rape and lives in a
city where there is much racial promiscuity. But because of his nature, he
continues to soldier on throughout the trial because it is a part of his job.
One quote that displays courage in the book is found on page 112. The quote is
"I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that the
courage is a man with a gun in his hand, It’s when you know you’re licked before
you begin but you begin anyway and you see through it no matter what"

The second characteristic Atticus shows throughout the novel is Feeble,
according to Scout. Because Scout is young, she thinks he, being 50 years old,
is old. But later on, when the rabies infested dog came around, Atticus shot the
dog with precise accuracy. The children find out later that Atticus had been an
excellent shot when he was younger, and they had new respect for Atticus as a
    father.

The third characteristic of Atticus Finch is that he is very humble. Early on in
the book, Mr Cunningham generously gives Atticus many assortments of food. When
Cunningham cannot come up with money for generous service, Atticus was willing
to accept nothing. A quote to back this up is on page 20. "Let it be the least
    of your worries Walter".

Overall, Atticus is a genuinely good person. He is an honest man who believes in
the essential goodness of man while accepting the inherent badness/evil of the
same. One Bible verse that relates to him standing up for what he believes in is
Deuteronomy 31:6. The verse states "Be strong and of a good courage, fear not,
nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he
will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” It shows Atticus will never give up on
his case, that God will never forsake him, and will reward him for his
    perseverance.

In the beginning of to kill a mockingbird scout is a very innocent little girl but as the story progresses she is very out of control for example in the story there was a kid named Walter Cunningham, his father Mr. Cunningham did not have a lot of money so he paid people back with the thing he would grow.
One day at school Walter did not have a lunch and His teacher Mrs. Caroline had offered him a quarter, but he did not accept it. (pg. 19-20) A verse that describes this is Galatians 5:23 which says “gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Scout is also very outspoken with her words, when Walter Cunningham came to their house for lunch she had no problem speaking what was on her mind. “But he’s gone and drowned his dinner in syrup,’’ I protested. “He’s poured it all over”. Calpurnia quickly pulled scout in the kitchen and told her be polite with her words. (pg. 23-24)
Scout shows that she is also very strong and she did not care what people said about her, even when Mrs. Dubose talks about her every time she walks by her house, Scout shows that she respects Atticus when he tell her to stop fighting (pg. 56-57)
Scout is a very caring and protective girl since her father was a lawyer people in the neighborhood always talking about her father because he represented a Negro; she always had her dads back even when her own family had talked about him and his decision to represent a Nigger.
A verse that I think represents this is, Deuteronomy 31:6 which says “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

In the story To Kill A Mockingbird, the character Scout Finch shows many characteristics. One of her characteristics is intelligence because Atticus teaches her to read before starting school. "Now tell your Father not to teach you anymore."(pg.17) Mrs. Caroline tells Scout not to let her father teach her any more, so that she does not get too ahead of herself.

Another characteristic that Scout has is that she is protective. She gets very upset and does not approve when everyone is calling her dad a "nigger lover". "You just take that back boy."(pg.74)Scout was ready to fight even though Atticus told her not to fight any more. She is willing to stand up for her dad no matter what.

Scout is also a tomboy. She does not have much interest with any stereotypical girl things. She likes to play with the boys and is not fond of wearing dresses like the rest of the girls.
"Aunt Alexandria's vision of my deportment involved playing with small stoves, tea sets... furthermore, I should be a ray of sunshine in my father's lonely life. I suggested that one could be a ray of sunshine pants as well." Scout knows who she is and is not going to change for anyone.

I think that Scout shows some godly characteristics. 1 Corinthians 15:58 "Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." Scout is willing to stand up for what she believes in no matter what everyone else thinks.

The character I chose is Scout. One characteristic of Scout is that she has a bad temper. She gets frustrated with things that include her family like when her cousin Francis called Atticus a ninja lover she got mad. In my oponion she was just trying to defend her family, but still. Pg. 85-86
Second characteristic of her is she is brave. Shes not afraid to defend herself or to beat up boys. Like when she beat up a boy in her class named Walter Cunningham even though he was just being himself. He's poor and doesn't have a lot of money, and all she did was tell her teacher why he won't take the money she offered him. In her words he made her start on the wrong foot with her that teacher. Memory verse "Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong." 1 Corinthians 16:13
Third characteristic is shes smart. Even though she is only in the first grade she knows how to read really well. She reads with her father every night. Her teacher doesn't think its good. She thinks it is damage to the brain. This really bothers Scout , and now she doesnt want to go to school anymore. So Atticus( her father) makes a compromise ( an agreement) with her if she keeps going to school, they will continue reading every night like they did before.
I think bravery is a godly characteristic because you can't let people walk all over you stand firm and have god on your side. I just don't think her kind of bravery is right. We are not supposed to beat up our classmates.

The character I will be talking about is Jeremy Finch. Jeremy Finch is a young man that is brave and very outgoing. He is willing to do anything anybody tells him to do. One characteristic that shows Jem was brave is when Dill dared Jeremy to go to the Radley's house and touch it. Another characteristic that shows he was bold was when Atticus told him to go back to the house and Jem denied, but he only denied it because he knew his father would have got shot that one night. Another characteristic is when Jem stopped the fight between Scout and Cecil Jacobs. A third characteristic that Jem shows he is brave is how he takes the fact that his father is a lawyer for a black man. Jem didn't believe all the rumors that people said. He didn't go fighting people and he didn't judge his father in any way.
Jeremy Finch is also obedient to his father. When Atticus tells Jem to do something, he'll do it. Jem shows that he was obedient when Atticus told him not to be rude to Mrs. Dubose, even though she said rude things about him.
I think Jeremy Finch shows Godly characteristics because he is very caring and loving to his family. He doesn't take them for granted and he appreciates everything he has. The Bibler Verse i have chosen to describe Jeremy Finch is 1 Chronicles 28:20, " Then David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous and do it. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for the Lord God, even my God, is with you. He will not leave you or forsake you, until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished. "

I’ve chosen Charles Baker Harris, known as Dill. Dill is a nerdy type little boy, who dresses all neat and nice. He is small for his size, intelligent, and doesn’t really fit in with Jem and Scout who were raised in a rural environment. Dill is a very characteristic person. One of them is he is very adventurous. Dill comes around every summer and stays with his aunt. During his summer he plays with Scout and Jem. He is adventurous by tagging along with Jem and Scout and starting trouble with Boo Radley, by trying to make him come out. In chapter one its quotes, “But by the end of August our repertoire was vapid from countless reproductions, and it was then that Dill gave us an idea of making Boo Radley to come out.”

Another characteristic about Dill is he is extremely imaginative. This is demonstrated by the way he acts, ideas he creates, and as well his peculiar choices throughout the book. Dill would often make a story about someone, like his father having a beard, which is a complete lie, and also telling false stories about Jem and Scout. Scout recalls this during a part in the book when she says, "Dill Harris could tell the biggest ones I ever heard. Among other things, he had been up on a mail plane seventeen times, he had been to Nova Scotia, he had seen an elephant, and his granddaddy was Brigadier General Joe Wheeler and left him his sword.”

Lastly, Dill has a characteristic of curiosity. Dill is always curious about things and that curiosity brought Jem and Scout into trouble. This is seen especially when he dares Jem to touch the Radley's house in the beginning of the book. They nearly get shot by Nathan Radley and while they are running away. The book quotes, “The Radley place fascinated Dill. In spit of our warnings and explanations it drew him as the moon draws water, but drew him no nearer than the light-pole on the corner, a safe distance from the Radley gate. There he would stand, his arm around the fat pole, staring and wondering.”

A bible verse that goes with Dill’s imagination is from Exodus 35:31-32 and says, And he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze. I think Dill does exhibit Godly characteristics by being loyal and using his manners to adults and is very friendly.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jeremy Finch (Jem) portrayed many characteristics about himself. He is a brave, protective, and daring person.

Jem is considered a brave person in the eyes of his sister, In chapter 4 Scout said, "Jem’s head at times was transparent: he had thought that up to make me understand he wasn't afraid of Radleys in any shape or form, to contrast his own fearless heroism with my cowardice." (Page 38) By this I believed that Scout is trying to say how Jem was not afraid to take on the Radley house, even though nobody would dare to go near that house. This made Jem take on the title as a brave person. In the book it said on page 14, “Jem wanted Dill to know once and for all that he was not scared of anything…” When I read this I knew that the author was trying to point out that Jem was a brave person for not being scared of anything.

Not only was Jem a brave person he was also a daring person. By this I mean that he was not afraid to take on the biggest or even the smallest dares. When Dill dared Jem to touch the Radley house, he did. “In all his life, Jem had never declined a dare.” (page 13) Jem wanted to keep his name and did not want to be known as the boy who was too scared to touch the house. That is why I think Jem shows a brave personality.

Jem is also a protective boy. He is protective of his little sister Scout. He warns her not to follow him and Dill, but she insists on tagging along. Dill had decided to go on a walk and Jem went with him and Scout wanted to go too. “You don’t have to come along, Angel May.” (pg. 51) Jem wanted to make sure that nothing would happen to his little sister. From this quote and many more I believe that Jem is a protective brother.

Jem shows characteristics shown in the Bible. He is a brave boy. In Deuteronomy 31:6 it says “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” I think that in order to be brave you have to have a mindset and believe that God is there with you, and no matter how big the task is you can conquer it with God’s help. I believe that Jem had to have a strong faith in God when it came to his father defending a black man. He had to not be terrified of them, but be strong and trust in God.

  19. In the book, To Kill A Mockingbird, Calpurnia shows that she is brave and courageous. The best example of this is in chapter 12 when she goes against what society deems fit and takes Scout and Jem to an all-black church. As they are about to walk into the church, they hear a voice saying, “What you up to Miss. Cal?” (pg. 119) The voice belongs to a Negro woman called Lula who wants to start a conflict concerning the white children. Lula further antagonizes Calpurnia by remarking, “I wants to know why your bringin white chillum to a Niger church.” (pg. 119) Calpurnia doesn’t back away but instead holds her ground by responding with, “They’s my comp’ny and it’s the same God ain’t it?” (pg. 119)

She shows courage by standing up to an ideal that has been around for so long that most consider it to be set in stone. But that is what Calpurnia does. She takes on an “I don’t care what the world says is right. I’m going to stand up for what I believe is right.” What makes this even more courageous is that this doesn’t take place against a different race, but against her race.

Another characteristic displayed by Calpurnia is that she is stern. The best example of this is when Walter Cunningham comes to the Finch’s house to have supper and starts to drown his food in syrup. Scout is startled by this and asks Walter what in the sam hill is he doing. Walter, publicly embarrassed and humbled, ducks his head down in shame. Cal is furious by this and requests Scout to see her in the kitchen. Cal scolds her by saying, “There’s some who don’t eat like us. But you ain’t called on to contradict ‘em at the table when they don’t. That boy’s yo comp’ny and if he wants to eat up the table cloth you let him, you hear?!”(pg.24) “Yo folks might be better’n the Cunningham’s but it don’t count for nothin’ the way you’re disgracin’ ‘em-if you can’t act fit to eat at the table you can just set here and eat in the kitchen!”(pg.25)

Now Calpurnia is not being stern to Scout to be mean, it’s just that she wants Scout to learn respect for other people and to be a better person because of it.

Calpurnia is a strict disciplinarian but she is also sweet and loving. She cares for the Finches and shows it through her actions. For example, on the first day of school Calpurnia knows Scout has had a bad day so she allows Scout to watch her prepare the food. Calpurnia kindness is evident as she never allows Scout to stay in the kitchen and then makes Scout her favorite food. (Pg. 29). Another example, is following the sermon at the black church occurs when Scout, Jem, and Calpurnina are walking back home. The love and affection that Calpurnina has for these children is evident when Scout asks her, if she can visit her at Calpurnia’s house. Calpurnia replies without hesitation, “Any time you want to. We’d be glad to have you.” (Pg. 126). Most nannies would not show this love to kids that are not their own. But, Calpurnia’s love is genuine and sincere. She treats them like she would her own children.

    2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

I feel that the following verse is the embodiment of Calpurnia’s characteristics and quality. It shows that God has given us the ability to stand up for what is right; the ability to love one another and respect one another and that when we are disciplined it is through the spirit of love. Calpurnia definitely has Godly characteristics.

  20. To Mrs. J
In To Kill A Mockingbird, the main character is Scout, also known as Jean Louise Finch. Her characteristics are shown throughout her interactions with school and relationships with others.

A characteristic that is first introduced is Scout's lack of self-discipline. For starting off on the "wrong foot" with her first grade teacher Miss Caroline, Scout took out her anger on another student, Walter Cunningham. "Catching Walter Cunningham in the schoolyard gave me pleasure, but when I was rubbing his nose in the dirt Jem came by and told me to stop. 'You're bigger'n he is,' he said." (Page 22) Another sequence of her lack of self-discipline is her not thinking before she speaks."Walter poured syrup on his vegetables and meat with a generous hand. He would probably have poured it into his milk glass had I not asked the sam hill he was doing."(Page 24) Due to this trait, she was often scolded by her authority figures such as Atticus or Calpurnia.

Even though Scout is lacking in self-discipline, her high regard for her father Atticus Finch repulses it. Her respect for him improves her self-control. When Atticus explains to Scout of the trials that will come ahead due to the court case of Tom Robinson, she honors his request. "'You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep your fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't you let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change...it's a good one, even if it does resist learning.'"(Page 76) Proof of honoring his request is when Scout, even though being called a coward, she is able to walk away from any provocations to a fight. "'Scout's a coward!" ringing in my ears. It was the first time I ever walked away from a fight. "(Page 77)
Her respect for her father is truly a godly characteristic. In Colossians 3:20, it proclaims,"Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord." She obeyed her father's wishes no matter what trials it would bring in it's path.

Lastly Scout has shown her protectiveness and care for her family. She has defended her father Atticus on several occasions. One such occasion is when Francis calls Atticus a "nigger-lover." "Francis looked at me carefully, concluded that I had been sufficiently subdued, and crooned, 'Nigger-lover...' This time, I split my knuckle to the bone on his front teeth." Even though, she defended them through violent circumstances, it is shown that she would not stand for someone defiling a loved one's name.

Jean Louise Finch, “Scout”, is a very intelligent girl. Atticus, Scout’s father, taught her how to read before school started making her quite intelligent. During school Mrs. Caroline, the teacher, tells her not to let Atticus teach her how to read. “Now you tell your father not to teach you anymore. It’s best to begin with a fresh mind. You tell him I’ll take over from here and try to undo the damage-“ (Mrs. Caroline, PG. 17) Scout is also a protective daughter. One day at school she fights a kid because he called her Dad a “nigger lover”. Her Dad tells her, “You might some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't let 'em get your goat." (P. 76).Last she likes to speak her thoughts. One day Walter Cunningham came to her house for dinner. When he got syrup her poured them all over his food and scout said, “He’s poured it all over-“(P.24). I think that Scout’s characteristics are very Godly, she is intelligent, protective, and she likes to speak her mind. Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch exemplifies many different characteristics. Atticus shows his perseverance in trying to prove that Tom Robinson was not guilty of rape towards Miss Mayella Ewell. Atticus strives through the persecution that Maycomb county gives him, because he knows that what he's standing for is right. He does not let the fact that Tom Robinson is a black man, stop him from defending him. Although people try to get Atticus down and discourage him from proving Tom not guilty, he did not let that affect him and his duty to serve for what is right. Atticus even portrays to his kids the importance of not retaliating just because someone might persecute you for your beliefs. "Scout, simply by the nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one's mine, I guess. You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't you let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change...it's a good one, even if it does resist learning." (p.76)

Atticus also portrays humbleness. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus never boasts. Although Atticus is confident that Tom Robinson is not guilty, he does not retaliate to those who doubt him. Atticus never wanted his kids to think he was a courageous man. He used others to be examples to both Scout and Jem. Even though Atticus is showing ultimate courage by defending a black man that no one thinks is innocent, he uses Mrs. Dubose recovery from morphine addiction as Scout and Jem's example of courage. "I wanted you to see something about her-I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting he idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand." (p.112)

Lastly, Atticus exemplifies kindness. Atticus had done some things for a farmer by the name of Mr. Cunningham. Mr. Cunningham was not able to pay him for all he had done, and Atticus allowed him to repay him with food. Atticus shows consideration and sympathy for those that are less fortunate. "Mr.Finch, I don't know when I'll ever be able to pay you." "Let that be the least of your worries, Walter." (p.20)

A Bible verse I feel best exemplifies Atticus' characteristics is Joshua 1:9. It states,"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." I feel like this verse best expresses Atticus' characteristics because it shows that you shouldn't care what other people say if you know what you're doing is right. The Lord knows your heart and He will be with you and protect you against all evil.

  23. Dear Mrs. Johnson-

In the book To Kill A Mocking Bird—Scout—Jean Louise Finch is the, main character of the story and also the narrator. She is about six when the book begins and is telling the events leading up to her brother, Jem (Jeremy Atticus finch), breaking his arm. Scout is a somewhat complex character for her young age she is very intelligent, protective, caring, short- tempered , prideful, and smart mouthed yet respectful. These traits all come and go as she grows up throughout the story.

Probably the first traits you will notice in scout is her intelligence and her mouth. In the beginning of the story scout starts school and already knows how to read. Her teacher Miss. Caroline is not very pleased with this reprimand scout for it. Telling scout to go home and tell her father not to teach her any more.

Scouts cutting response to this is.” Teach me... Atticus ain’t got time to teach me anything.”(pg.17) This was only one of her many remarks made throughout the book. After being told another time scout still tries to add her two sense but Miss. Caroline cuts her off (also pg.17).

Scouts protective side and the respect she has for her father is shown when Cecil Jacobs says, “Scout Finch’s daddy defended niggers”(pg.74) she is getting ready to fight him when Jem walks up behind her and stops her. She remembers what Atticus said to her about fighting but she had forgotten about it because Cecil Jacobs had crossed a line with scout. He had said something about her father whom she loves and respected very much. When she returns to school the next day and thinks to herself,” If I fought with Cecil I would let Atticus down… I could take being called a coward for him.”(pg.77) This is how she shows the respect she has for her father by giving up her pride to honor his wishes.

Scout shows her adornment for her father in how much she respects him and wishes not to disappoint him. So much to the point that when she gets in trouble for fighting with Francis she asks her Uncle Jack, “Promise you won’t tell Atticus…I’d rather he think we were fightin’ about somethin’ else instead. Please promise..”(pg.86) even though she knows that she would most likely get out of trouble with her family she would not be able to bear the disappointment Atticus would have in her.

Proverbs 11:2(NIV) states “Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” Pride is not a godly characteristic. Scout starts out with a lot of pride and all it does is get her in trouble. As the story progresses, she learns by obeying her father not to be so prideful. This changes Scout for the better it causes her to avoid the disputes and be cautious in her words. In the same way we need to learn from our heavenly Father not to be so prideful in ourselves but to always honor God in all we say, do, and act.

  24. Dear Mrs. Johnson,

Atticus Finch has many characteristics throughout the novel To Kill a Mocking Bird. One very evident characteristic Atticus exemplifies is he is a very honorable man. There are so many examples of his noble deeds. One of Atticus honorable characteristics is when Walter Cunningham, a farmer, is not able to pay Atticus with money. Atticus said Walter did not have to pay, but Walter always pays for what he owes. Atticus lets him pay with food without a time limit. “Let that be the least of your worries, Walter,” Atticus said. (p.20). Another thing that can be considered noble is when there was a “mad dog” in town.
Atticus has good gunman skills and shoots the dog. “Tim Johnson leaped, flopped over and crumpled on the sidewalk in a brown-and-white heap. He didn’t know what hit him.”(p.96).

Atticus Finch is a zealous man. Atticus defends a black man named Tom Robinson, who is accused of raping a woman named Mayella Ewell. Atticus was very devoted to his case. Through torment and rejection by people in Maycomb County he was determined to prove Tom Robinson was innocent. Atticus persevered through his trials because he knew what was right. He was never willing to compromise his beliefs for the sake of being liked by his county. Atticus Finch said, “But before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.” (p.105)

Another characteristic of Atticus Finch is he is very intellectual. He knows how to use his words to calm people down and to help people through situations. His intelligence is one of the reasons he is such a great lawyer and able to get himself out of tough situations. Atticus is always there for his children Scout and Jem. His daughter, Scout, is always getting into fights. Atticus gives her some wisdom saying, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." (pg. 30)

A Bible verse that represents Atticus Finch as honorable is Romans 12:8 (NLT) which states, “If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.” This applies to Atticus because he is always gladly helping others and encouraging them. He takes any responsibility he has and does his best to succeed. Doing what is right, no matter the cost, is what Atticus strives for.

Some godly characteristics Atticus portrays are the Fruits of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV0 states, “But the fruits of the spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Atticus shows all these things in his daily life. He has a love for Tom Robinson and is patient with his kids and many other examples. These are just some examples of how Atticus shows the fruits of the spirit.

The character I chose was Bob Ewell.. All of Ewell’s characteristics that are listed in the book are horrible. Bob Ewell is a very mean and selfish drunk who does not take good care of his own kids. During a conversation Atticus has with Scout, Atticus states that Bob Ewell spends his relief checks on liquor. “It is against the law, all right,” said my father, “and it’s certainly bad, but when a man spends his relief checks on green whiskey his children have a way of crying from hunger pains. I don’t know of any landowner around here who begrudges those children any game their father can hit.”(p.31)In chapter 22 Ewell exhibits another ungodly characteristic which is uncontrollable anger. “It was Miss Stephanie’s pleasure to tell us: this morning Mr. Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat in his face, and told him he’d get him if it took the rest of his life.”(p.217)The final characteristic of Mr. Bob Ewell that I will be listing is his extreme laziness. “The first thing was that Mr. Bob Ewell acquired and lost a job in a matter of days probably made himself unique in the annals of the nineteen-thirties: he was the only man I ever heard of who was fired from the WPA for laziness.”(p.248)None of Mr. Bob Ewell’s characteristics were godly; in fact all of them that were listed are ungodly. In the book of Proverbs the bible warns about being a slacker. Proverbs 6:9-11 states, “How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest-and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.”

Jem Finch is an extremly brave boy. At first bravery is getting to Boo Radley's house and back. He was always someone who never turned down a bravey test. "In all his life Jem never turned down a dare."

He also was some one who knew who to look up to, someone who he could learn from. He looked up to Atticus Finch who at one point shot a rabid dog. He saw how Atticus did feel sorrow for the dog, but he also needed to do what he needed to do to prtect his family. I believe this made Jem see things in a different light. That not always what you do is pleasing, but you do what you need to do to protect your loved ones.

He is also very protective of Scout in the book. One example is when he and Scout are on the way to school he comforts and makes sure Scout is ok. "Don't you cry, now, Scout... don't cry now, don't you worry-' he muttered at me all the way to school." (pg. 62-66)

"Don't let any one look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity." (1 Timothy 4:12) I believe that this describes Jem in many ways. In the fact that even tough he was young he always was indepent. Scout looked up to him, which was good because he was someone that never gave up. He was someone who loved no matter what. In a fight he could never stay mad for that long. He always came back to love. He had great faith in Atticus, and stood bye that faith. (He waverd just a bit.)

In the book, To Kill A Mockingbird, (Scout) Jean Louise Finch is the protagonist and narrator of the story. She is a young girl born and raised in Maycomb County with her father, Atticus, and her brother, Jem. Scout shows many characteristics in this story but a few stand out to me. She is very intelligent, caring, but she also has a lack of self-control. These characteristics at many times in the story get Scout into trouble.

The first characteristic I am going to talk about is Scout’s intelligence. In chapter 1, page 17, Scout shows her above average intelligence to her class when she is able to read the alphabet and pieces from The Mobile Register. Though her teacher, Miss Caroline, does not feel the way Atticus is teaching Scout to read is right, Scout assures her teacher that her father simply doesn’t have time to teach her to read but she has learns to do so on her own. Her intelligence allows her to comprehend things that are sometimes more mature then her understanding.

The second characteristic I am going to talk about is Scout’s ability to care for others. Since Atticus must defend, Tom Robinson, a black man who was accused of raping Mayella Ewell, his name is being tarnished around town. Scout is very proud of her father and does not like to hear people speaking about him in the wrong way. On page 85, Scout gets angry towards the family’s cousin Francis. “What did Francis call him?” , asked Uncle Jack. “A ninja –lover. I ain’t very sure what that means, but the way Francis said it—tell you one thing right now Uncle Jack, I’ll be--I swear before God if I’ll sit there and let him say something about Atticus.” ,said Scout. This proves that Scout has a side that is very caring and protective for her family.

The last characteristic Scout shows is her lack of Self-Control. In this book, Scout gets into a few fights that are caused by her short temper. In chapter 3, Scout gets into a fight with Walter Cunningham. ”Catching Walter Cunningham in the schoolyard gave me some pleasure, but when I was rubbing his nose in the dirt Jem came by and told me to stop.” ,said Scout. (pg.22) Another time where she lacks self-control is when she criticizes Walter for pouring syrup all over his plate. (pg.24) These kind of outbursts are what cause Scout to get into trouble during the story.

A godly characteristic that Scout has is her ability to care for others. At times, Scout may be stubborn but when it comes to family, she will do what it takes to protect them. “Honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.”

In To Kill a Mockingbird Jem Finch portrays many characteristics, but the three that stands out the most would be his bravery, short tempered, and creativity. Dill had dared Jem to go touch the side of Boo Radley's house. Jem's response was "I have never backed down from a dare(PG.13). That is one way he showed his bravery. Another way he showed his bravery is was when Mrs. Dubose asked him "So you brought that dirty little sister of yours , did you?" Jem quickly and quietly replied "My sister is not dirty and I am not scared of you."(PG.106) The way he showed a quick temper is when they were at Boo Radley house. Scout was scared so in his response he said , "Scout i'm telling you for the last time , shut your trap or go home ; I declare to the lord you're getting more like a girl everyday!"(PG.51) There are some more ways he showed quick temper. Jem does not like it when people talk about Atticus. So he was talking to Mrs. Dubose and she was talking about Atticus in a negative way. She said , "Your father's no better than the niggers and trash he works for."(PG. 101) He showed his creativity when he had built the snowman with Scout. Jem said to Scout , "Mr. Avery's sort of shaped liked a snowman, ain't he?"(PG.67) That was a good way he showed his creativity.
Here are some Bible verses that relates to jem's temper problems. 1 Samuel 20:7 says, ''If he says Very well, then your serveant is safe. But if he loses his temper, you can be sure that he is determined to harm you." Proverbs 19:19 says, "A hot-tempered person must pay the penalty; rescue them, and you will have to do it again." Proverbs 29:22 says, "An angry person stirs up conflict, and a hot-tempered person commits many sins."
In the book Jem did not experience that much Godly characteristics. Jem was the kind of person who did not think before he say. If something happened he was always quick to say or to answer in a bad way. When he first met Dill he was very rude to him. Another way his temper got involved was when he had hit all the top of Mrs.Dubose camellia bush. I'm gonna leave you with a scripture about treating others right. Hebrews 13:1 says, "Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters."

  29. Mrs Johnson-
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout portrays many characteristics but the three that stuck out in the story to me were her intelligence, lack of self control, and her protectiveness. The reasons I see protective qualities to Scout is when her father, Atticus Finch, is defending the black man, Tom Robinson, who is on trial for allegedly raping Bob Ewell 's daughter. And during this time many people's refer to the Finch family as "nigger-lovers" and when Scout's cousin call Atticus a "nigger-lover" she punches her in the mouth. In response to Scout's quick temper about the situation, her father tells her this, " You might hear some ugly talk about it at school but do one thing for me if you will: you just keep your head high and the fist down..." (PG 76) Scout also shows intellegence by the fact that she can already read before she has started school. But on her first day of school she is repermanded by her teacher for the fact that she can already read. Her teacher says," Now you tell your father not to teach you any more. It is better to begin with a fresh mind." (PG 17) And in many instances Scout portrays a lack of self-control. She has quite a few fights in her childhood years because of uncalled for outbursts. " My fist were clenched and I was ready to let fly. Atticus had promised me he would wear me out if he heared of me fighting any more; I was to old and to big for such childish things and the sooner I learned to hold them in the better off everybody would be. I soon forgot..." ( PG 740)
But the Christian character that Scout portrays is a caring heart for others. Even the fights she gets in is her best knowledge of how to stick up for her family. The verse I choose for Scout was Philipians 2:3-4, which says, Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain or conceit. Rather in humility value others above yourself, not looking to your own interest but each of you to the interest of others.

  30. Dear Emilie,
I agree with you on every characteristic that you said about Scout. She is very protective. Whenever somebody says something about Atticus she's ready to fight. Just like the incident you mentioned in your first paragraph. (6th and 7th line)
The lack of self-control is most definitely a great characteristic to describe Scout by. She has no control what so ever over her temper. This bad habit of hers gets her in trouble later on in the book.
Intelligence is another good one for her. Scout's just a very smart girl. On her first day of school, she got in trouble for being able to read so well. At this time she was only in the first grade. this girl had to be pretty smart.

  31. Dear Mrs. Johnson,
Atticus Finch is a loving father and lawyer who have many different characteristics. The three that stick out mostly to me are the following: his courage, humbleness, and intelligence.
Atticus’s courage is the one characteristic that sticks out to me the most. I think He shows his courage by trying to prove Tom Robinson innocent of raping Mayella Ewell. He also shows his courage by just taking the case on. In that day, black people weren’t liked that much.
Humbleness is really one the best traits he has. He could have been very haughty towards Tom Robinson, but instead he was very kind towards him. His humbleness shows throughout the whole book.
Atticus portrays intelligence through a lot of situations. A good example is that whenever somebody was trying to punish the kids he could always talk them out of it. Another thing is that when Mrs. Dubose died he said, “She’s the bravest person in he ever knew.” (PG.112) He was smart enough to know and understand what Mrs. Dubouse was going through.
In my opinion, I think all of the characteristics that I mentioned about him are very Christ like. The verse that I would say for this is Deuteronomy 31:6 – “Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”
